Forklift Attachments New Haven - New Haven (population 129,779) is a city in the state of Connecticut. It is located on the northern coast of Long Island Sound within New Haven County. The city has grown by about 5 percent ever since the year 2000, more than most cities within New England. It is probably best known as the home of Yale University, an institution that has been vital to the city's economy. Yale is New Haven's biggest employer.
The city of New Haven is the second-biggest city within the state of Connecticut. It is part of the Greater New Haven metropolitan area, that has a total population of over half a million.
During 1638, the town was founded by English Puritans who built the city on the "Nine Square Plan," or four-by-four grid. Those original city blocks are a National Historic Planning Landmark. The central common block is New Haven Green, which forms the center of downtown New Haven. New Haven is occasionally called "The Elm City" because of many trees planted there in the first public tree planting program within the US.
The city of New Haven has a diversified, healthy economy. Biotechnology, hospitals, professional services, financial services, and retail trade help to form its economic base. Over half of the economy is based on financial services, healthcare and education. Reaserach and development organizations and high-technology companies are attracted by Yale Medical School and Yale University. The growing bio-technology sector gets its boost primarily from Yale Medical School, pharmaceutical firms and local healthcare.
Manufacturing forms approximately 9% of the economic base. Everything from watches to airplane parts are produced in the region. The city of New Haven is the biggest wholesale distribution center within the state of Connecticut. New Haven's main employment sectors are health services and education; transportation, utilities and trade; professional and business services; manufacturing; government; leisure and hospitality; and finance.
Greater New Haven is home to three Fortune 1000 companies: the headquarters of The Knights of Columbus are within New Haven, the electrical equipment producer Hubbell is based within Orange, and Amphenol is based within Wallingford.
