The population was just over 44,000 based on the most recent census in 2010, making it the largest city within the Magic Valley region of Idaho. Twin Falls serves as a regional commercial center for both northeastern Nevada and south-central Idaho, as the largest city in a 166 kilometer or 100 mile radius.

The City of Twin Falls is the main city of the ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. This officially includes Jerome and Twin Falls Counties. Additionally, the resort community of Jackpot, Nevada, Elko County is also considered to be a part of the greater Twin Falls area, even though unofficially.

The City of Twin Falls is the fastest growing city located within South-Central Idaho and is presently Idaho's 7th largest city. Twin Falls County has an unemployment rate at about 9.5%. This figure came in under the state's average of 9.6%. The unemployment was steadily decreasing to a low of just below 2% from 1998 until 2007. As of April the year 2011, the unemployment rate increased to nearly 9.5% in tandem with the national economy.

The majority of growth within the City of Twin Falls has happened during the last 20 years. Between 2006 till 2011, there has been an acceleration of growth although there are many which have been prominent members of the economy for many years.

The City of Twin Falls is home to award winning cheese producer Glanbia Foods. This company is part of a larger Glanbia plc., that is a key Irish food company. Because the city was one of the world's premier farming areas, with a huge concentration on agriculture, the company selected Twin Falls as an ideal alternative. Another award winning food company, Falls Brand is located in the southern portion of Twin Falls. The Old Fashioned Basque Chorizo sausage of Falls Brands won the "Hold the Mustard" award presented by the NMA or also known as National Meat Association. Every year, they hold this annual contest the "NMA Annual Gourmet Sausagefest."

The College of Southern Idaho or CSI is another mainstay of the economy. This Junior College boasts a student population of roughly 3,433 students and is a famous option to those students who are not quite ready to go to a 4-year university. There are CSI residential halls available for those students who are going to school from out of state.

Some of the other large employers consist of Lamb Weston, which has a food processing plant located in the western area of Twin Falls. They have annual revenue of roughly $100 million per annum and employ no less than 500 residents. Another large employer consists of Amalgamated Sugar Company, that makes White Satin sugar.

Twin Falls has seen much development, with numerous retail store openings all around the city. This expansion has happened between the year 2006 and the year 2011 in spite of a troubled economy of the whole country.
