The city of Omaha is situated on the Missouri River, roughly 30 km north of the mouth of the Platte River. Omaha is the biggest city in the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area (population roughly 865,300) and the largest in the state. There are over 1.2 million residents in a 80-km radius of the city's center, forming the Greater Omaha area, the 60th-biggest metropolitan area within the nation.

The area was first the home of the Omaha Indians. The city of Omaha was founded in the year 1854 during the settling of America. It was an essential supply stop for people heading west. With the arrival of the Union Pacific transcontinental railroad during the year 1869, the city of Omaha became a transportation hub for the area, which developed as a main center for agricultural products such as grains and livestock.

The city's economy is somewhat diverse, with a very strong agricultural sector. Also strong are Omaha's banking, insurance, and high-tech telecommunications sectors. Omaha is the home of many company headquarters, such as Ameritrade, ConAgra Foods, Mutual of Omaha, Berkshire Hathaway, Union Pacific Railroad, West Teleservices and Sitel Corporation. The American military is another major employer. Offutt Air Force Base is home of the US Strategic Command.

Omaha offers many attractions related to the arts. The city of Omaha has its own symphony, opera and many theaters. The Joslyn Art Museum has amassed a fine collection of western and Native American art. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts supports the creativity of artists through artist residencies. There are several museums within the city, including Durham Western Heritage Museum, Great Plains Black History Museum and El Museo Latino.

Throughout Omaha are some well maintained and developed trail systems. There is over 130 km of paved trails for the residents and visitors to enjoy. The most famous section for walking, jogging, rollerblading and cycling is the Keystone Trail/Bellevue Loop Trail. To experience nature outside of the city, the nearby Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge has geese, ducks and bald eagles. Fishing and water sports facilities are available on lake Manawa, Carter Lake and the Missouri River.

Omaha's attractions for visitors date back to its early history, when people such as famous British writer Rudyard Kipling visited here. In 1883, the city of Omaha was the location of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, drawing 8,000 spectators. Omaha has numerous tourist attractions today. Downtown Omaha is the location of The Old Market, a successful retail center and a major attraction. Tourists can go to the Henry Doorly Zoo and attend the College World Series.
