Forklift Attachments Fairbanks - The city of Fairbanks, Alaska is a home-rule city. The city of Fairbanks also serves as the borough seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. With a population of 31,535, Fairbanks is the 2nd largest city within the state of Alaska, next to the city of Anchorage. It is the main city of the Fairbanks, Alaska Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of around 97,500.

The city of Fairbanks is nestled within the Tanana Valley at the confluence of the Tanana and the Chena Rivers. The city of Fairbanks is bordered on its northern side by a chain of hills, beyond which lie the White Mountains and the Yukon River. The Tanana River forms the southern border of the city. South of the Tanana River is a 160 km stretch of bog and marsh which rises into the Alaska Range. On clear days these mountains are visible from the city of Fairbanks. To the west and east are low valleys and ridges up to 910 m above sea level.

During its history, Fairbanks has been susceptible to serious flooding which have been caused by ice jams or by heavy rainfalls during spring breakup. In the month of August the year 1967, a heavy rainfall caused the Chena to flood nearly the entire Fairbanks town. This catastrophic overnight flood started the creation of the Chena River Lakes Flood Control Project. A 15 m dam and 13 km spillway were constructed in the Chena River. The purpose of the project was to redirect the Chena upstream from Fairbanks into the Tanana River, and protect the city of Fairbanks from a future flood.

The city features a rather diverse economy and is home to the University of Alaska Fairbanks. A lot of the jobs within Fairbanks is provided by federal, local and state government service jobs and by the university. About 33% of the population is working in government services. Industries comprise transportation, mining, manufacturing, communications, financial, and medical services. The region is home to Fort Wainwright and Eielson Air Force Base. Tourism is a strong sectors with roughly 325,000 people visiting the city of Fairbanks on a yearly basis.
