 Forklift Attachments Providence - Providence is the capital of Rhode Island State. It was amongst the very first cities to be established within the United States. Located in the County of Providence, it is the largest city in Rhode Island State and the 3rd largest within the New England region. The city itself has a modest population of approximately 178,000. Nevertheless, it is the anchor city in the metropolitan statistical area (MSA), that has a population of 1.6 million. This makes it the 37th biggest metropolitan population in the country. The MSA spills beyond the Rhode island border into the southern portions of Massachusetts.
When it comes to land area, the city of Providence is fairly small. It is situated on Narragansett Bay on the mouth of the Providence River. Providence is characterized by seemingly erratic streets and a demographic in flux.
The founder of the city, Roger Williams, was exiled from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for religious reasons. He together with his followers settled along the Providence River and founded the township in the year 1636. They named the community for God's Providence, which Williams thought was responsible for giving him a new location to create a community. Providence was called the "Beehive of Industry," since it was one of the first cities within the country to industrialize, producing jewelry and silverware. Manufacturing is still an essential sector within the city of Providence, but the local economy has shifted to service, health care and education industries. Eight hospitals and seven educational institutions are situated in Providence. Providence is seeking to be called nowadays as the "Creative Capital".
As state capital, government services are essential to the economy of Providence. The finance sector is also strong, with many smaller financial firms and some major financial companies situated there. Citizen bank's headquarters are situated in the city of Providence.
Jewelry and silverware manufacturing and design are still dynamic industries. The manufacturing sector of Providence nowadays makes such diverse products like for instance plastic and rubber goods, instruments, electrical equipment and fabricated metal. Various companies make supplies for the military. The state of Rhode Island encourages industry by offering generous job training tax credits to companies. Fortune 1000 company Nortek Incorporated and Fortune 500 company Textron are headquartered in the city. GTECH's global headquarters are also located here.
There is a very rich culture and arts sector within this modest-sized city. Among the top art schools in the nation, referred to as the Rhode Island School of Design, is located within the city. The school also houses an excellent Museum of Art. Additionally, Providence has the Providence Arts Center, Providence Children's Museum, Roger William park and Zoo, Rhode Island Philharmonic, providence Dunkin' Donut Center and Trinity Repertory Company.
The city of Providence is also the location of the famed College of Culinary Arts, that is situated on the campus of Providence's Johnson & Wales University. Graduates of the culinary school have established several restaurants in Providence, giving Providence more eateries per capita than any other major city within the US.
