 Forklift Attachments Fort Wayne - Fort Wayne is situated in the state of Indiana and serves and the county seat of Allen County. The city boasts a population over 250,000 and is the 2nd biggest within the state according to the 2010 census. The municipality of Fort Wayne is situated in the northeastern portion of Indiana State and is approximately 50 miles or 80 km south of the Michigan border and 29 km or 18 miles west of the border in Ohio.
Fort Wayne is the main city in the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Statistical Area. This is an area which encompasses Wells, Allen and Whitley counties. Their combined population is estimated at 414,315. Additionally, the Fort Wayne-Auburn-Huntington CSA is another combined statistical area that comprises Adams, Huntington, Noble and DeKalb counties for a combined population of 610,015 inhabitants.
The U.S. Army built Fort Wayne in the year 1794, last in a series of forts located near the Miami Indian Village of Kekionga. It was constructed under the direction of American Revolutionary War statesman General "Mad" Anthony Wayne. The fort was named in Wayne's honor and was established at the confluence of the St. Mary's, Maumee and St. Joseph Rivers. Fort Wayne became a trading post for settlers from Europe. In 1823, the village was platted and following the completion of the Erie and Wabash Canals, the area saw enormous growth.
The Miami first nation established a settlement at Kekionga in the middle part of the17th century. The settlement was situated along the rivers St. Mary's, Maumee and St. Joseph. The village served the Miami nation and various other Algonquian tribes. It is estimated by historians that about the year 1676, missionaries and priests from France visited the Miami people as they were returning from a mission at Lake Michigan. In the year 1680, a letter was sent to the Governor-General of Canada from René-Robert Cavelier, Sieur de La Salle, stating that he too had stopped there. The French traders established a post during the 1680s, as it was the crucial portage between the Mississippi River and the Great Lakes.
In the mid-20th century, the city of Fort Wayne developed into a key manufacturing hub. Companies including General Electric, Magnavox, Westinghouse and International Harvest were instrumental in the cities local economy. Moreover, Essex Wire, Rea Magnet Wire and Phelps Dodge made the biggest concentration of copper wire production within the globe in the WWII. After the century drew to a close, the reduction of manufacturing jobs all over the country, along with improvements in technology led Fort Wayne to be counted amongst other cities located within the Rust Belt.
The city's economy has begun to diversify over the last few decades into insurance, security and defense, health care, and education. Recently, the service and hospitality sector has also grown. During the year 2006, there were 5.4 million tourists who visited and spent over $415 million in the city of Fort Wayne.
The city has become the headquarters for businesses such as: Do It Best, Steel Dynamics, North American Van Lines, Medical Protective, Genteq, Vera Bradley, Rea Magnet Wire and Sweetwater Sound. Steel Dynamics is the only Fortune 500 Company.
