The Mdewakanton band of Dakota was pressed by the American government to sell their land and this transaction, allowed people arriving from the east to live there.

During 1856, the Minnesota Territorial Legislature authorized the existing Minneapolis as a township on Mississippi's west bank. In the year 1867, Minneapolis was incorporated as a city. Rail service started that same year between the cities of Chicago and Minneapolis. In the year 1872, it eventually joined with the east bank of St. Anthony.

The main economy of the city nowadays is centered on finance, commerce, trucking services, industry, rail services and health care. There are smaller aspects to the economy that are equally as vital like for example: insurance, food processing, high technology, graphic arts, publishing and milling.
