 Forklift Attachments Hartford - The city of Hartford, Connecticut is the capital city of the state, and was the county seat of Hartford County, until the state disbanded the county government during 1960. Based on the Census of 2010, the city's population was 124,775, making it the 7th largest city within New England. It is the 2nd most densely inhabited city situated on the Connecticut River, that is the biggest river in New England. The city of Hartford ranks Connecticut's 3rd biggest city, coming in after the coastal cities of New Haven and Bridgeport. With a population of 1,212,381, Greater Hartford was the largest metropolitan area in the state of Connecticut, according to the census of 2010.
Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, visited the area in 1614. Shortly after, trade was set up at Good Hope or Fort Goede Hoop, by the New Netherland colony. This particular fort was located at the convergence of the Connecticut and Park Rivers. It was established during the year 1623 but the fur traders ended up abandoning their post by the year 1654. Nowadays, the region close to the location is still referred to as Dutch Point.
During 1635, the first English settlers started to come to the region. Originally, their settlement was referred to as Newtown. During the year 1637, it was renamed Hartford. This name was chosen to honor the home of Samuel Stone, among the very first settlers, who came from Hertford, an English town.
Hartford has the reputation of being the "Insurance capital of the world." It is the headquarters base and home for numerous major insurance companies, even though some of the insurance firms have relocated or moved a part of their operations to cities located nearby within the Hartford area, together with other places. There is an organization in Hartford referred to as Riverfront Recapture. They work to increase public access to the Connecticut River and have added a network of public recreational facilities along with a vast network of parks.
