For most of the 20th century, the city of Tulsa was called the "Oil Capital of the World" and played a major part as one of the most vital centers for the oil industry in the United States. The Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa features a great compilation of American art from the colonial times to the present. There is an emphasis on art from the west. The collection housed here was once owned by Tulsa oil magnate Thomas Gilcrease, but was later purchased by the city of Tulsa in the year 1955. Included in the art is about 10,000 paintings, drawings, sculptures and prints by 400 artists. Of Frederic Remington's 22 bronzes, 18 could be seen here. Other museums and cultural attractions within the city of Tulsa comprise the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Tulsa Air and Space Center and the Fenster Museum of Jewish Art. Tulsa is home to the Oklahoma Aquarium and the Tulsa Zoo. Mayfest is a 4-day outdoor music and arts festival which draws 250,000 people each and every year.

Even though the oil business has historically dominated Tulsa's economy, efforts in economic diversification have created a base in the sectors of aerospace, finance, technology, telecommunications, manufacturing and high tech. The Tulsa International Airport (TUL) as well as the Tulsa Port of Catoosa, the most inland seaport within the country, connect the area with global trade and transportation. An American Airlines maintenance base at Tulsa International Airport is the biggest employer of Tulsa and the largest maintenance facility within the world, serving as the airline's global engineering and maintenance headquarters, whilst the Tulsa Port of Catoosa and the Tulsa International Airport house extensive industrial parks.
