Greater Grand Forks, also called The Grand Cities, comprises Grand Forks and the twin city of East Grand Forks, within the State of Minnesota. The Grand Forks, ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of nearly 100,000.
Grand Forks is located on the Red River banks within the Red River Valley. This region is a low-lying region which is subject to some flooding. The most recent large scale flood in the year 1997, was among the most severe since 1826. The early French fur traders named the township Les Grandes Fourches. It was established at the fork of the Red River and the Red Lake River by Alexander Griggs, a steamboat captain, and incorporated in the year 1881. Agriculture soon flourished within the fertile valley soil.
Now, the City of Grand Forks is dependent on various modern industries, like health care, defense, manufacturing, food processing, higher education and scientific research. No single sector dominates the economy of Grand Forks. Altru Health System is the biggest private employer of Grand Forks. The University of North Dakota, in downtown Grand Forks, is a main center of higher education, the oldest such institution in the state, and the biggest employer in the metro area. A big percentage of Grand Forks area jobs are provided by state and federal government employers. West of the city is Grand Forks Air Force Base, which provides numerous jobs for both enlisted personnel and civilian workers. The City of Grand Forks is accessed by Grand Forks Air Force Base and Grand Forks International Airport.
Within Grand Forks, there are major manufacturing firms producing products such as wind turbines and aircrafts. J.R. Simplot Company is among the numerous food processing companies within Grand Forks. The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a flour mill that is owned by North Dakota and is the biggest within the country. There are key call centers within Grand Forks. Locally owned businesses include Hugo's supermarkets, Alerus Financial and Home of Economy.
The City of Grand Forks boasts lots of fine cultural and sports places, such as the Chester Fritz Auditorium, the Alerus Center and the Ralph Engelstad Arena. The North Dakota Museum of Art is among many art galleries.
