The city is also the principal city of the Gainesville Metropolitan Area or also known as MSA. During 2010, the Census recorded the population as being 124,354. Gainesville is home to the University of Florida, the 6th largest campus in the country as well as Santa Fe College.
In 1869, the town of Gainesville was incorporated and named to honor General Edmund Pendleton, a famous commander in the Second Seminole War. Gainesville flourished and prospered in the late 19th Century due to its success of the citrus and phosphate businesses. Gainesville's central location likewise allowed it to become a main target of the railroad industry.
The start of the 20th Century saw a devastating effect on the cotton crops because of the boll weevil infestation. The university has continued to bring success to the area even in the latter part of the century. Currently, the city of Gainesville is known for its various cultural places, historic districts, world class medical facilities and the newly restored city structures.
The areas biggest employers comprise the city government, the Shands Healthcare System and the University of Florida. The top jobs sectors in the city include: education, retail, scientific, technical and professional services, healthcare, accommodation and construction services and food services. Moreover, among the area's major industries is agriculture.
The Gainesville Technology Enterprise Center helps local technology firms expand their business. The center works to be able to improve local economy and create high paying jobs by being involved in various projects.
Thomas Center is considered to be the central hub of Gainesville. It is the place for numerous galleries, musical programs and art exhibits. The Center is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It contains local history exhibits, meeting rooms, the nearby Grace and Sidney Knight Children's Theatre, performance space and the surrounding Thomas Center Gardens. There are other cultural facilities within the city of Gainesville such as the Curtis M. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the Hippodrome State Theatre, the Harn Museum Art, the Florida Museum of natural History, the Civic Media Center, the Gainesville Community Playhouse, the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre and the Olustee Battlefield State Historic Site.
Having the University of Florida in the vicinity really enhances Gainesville's opportunities for cultural lifestyles in the community. The School of Art and Art History, the School of Theatre and Dance and the School of Music are all under the umbrella of the Florida College of Fine Arts, along with various other programs. The Center for World Art and Digital Worlds and the University Galleries are other establishments on site.
