During the past decade the city of Killeen has gone through substantial growth. During the year 2000, the population was only 86,911. By 2009, it was 119,510 and during the year 2010 the population had risen to 127,921. Killeen is amongst the principle cities of the Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood Metropolitan Statistical Area.

First, the area which Killeen City now occupies was a farming community referred to as Palo Alto. Palo Alto had been around ever since the year 1872. The Gulf, Santa Fe and Colorado Railway purchased 360 acres of land during 1881, comprising the land where Palo Alto was situated. They built a 70-block town on the land. The town was named after the assistant general manager of railroad, Frank P. Killeen. The city of Killeen prospered, and by the following year a salon, railroad depot, several stores, and a school had been developed. Several inhabitants from nearby communities relocated to the city of Killeen and by 1884 the population had risen to roughly 350 individuals. During this time, Killeen City had five general stores, two gristmills, two cotton gins, two saloons, a lumberyard, a blacksmith shop, and a hotel.

Fort Hood is located just next to Killeen City. As a result, the economy within the city of Killeen is mostly dependent on the soldiers stationed at the Fort. Fort Hood is the area's largest source of job. Different fields of work within the city are educational services, government, healthcare, construction, food and accommodation services, and finance and insurance. Roughly 25% of the workforce works in sales and occupations. Around 24% is employed in service work, and roughly 21% is involved in management, professional and related occupations.
