During 1816, Chattanooga was established at Ross's Landing by John Ross who was Chief of the Cherokee Indians. In 1838, the city adopted the name Chattanooga and the name is derived from Native American origin.

Every June, the city of Chattanooga hosts the 9 day music festival called the Riverbend Festival within the downtown area. One of the more popular events is the "Bessie Smith Strut". It is a one-night showcase of jazz and blues music which is named for the most noted blues singer within the city. The "Southern Brewer's Festival" and the "River Roast" festival" celebrate such traditional staples the South is known for such as barbecue and beer.
