It has a population of 6,346,105, making it the country's 17th-biggest state by population, and covers 42,169 square miles or 109,220 km2, making it the 36th-largest by total land area. The state of Tennessee is bordered by the state of North Carolina to the east, Virginia and Kentucky towards the north, Arkansas and Missouri to the west and Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia towards the south.
The Appalachian Mountains dominate the eastern area of Tennessee, and the Mississippi River forms the state's western border. Tennessee's second largest and capital city is Nashville, that has a population of 626,144. Memphis is the state's biggest city, with a population of 670,902. Nashville has the state's biggest metropolitan area, at 1,589,934 people.
Tennessee has played a vital role in the development of early blues and rock and roll music. Beale Street in Memphis is considered by many to be the birthplace of the blues, with musicians consisting of W.C. Handy performing in its clubs as early as 1909. Memphis was likewise home to Sun Records, where musicians such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Charlie Rich and Roy Orbison started their recording careers, and where rock and roll took shape during the 1950s. The 1927 Victor recording sessions in Bristol generally mark the start of the country music genre, and the rise of the Grand Ole Opry during the 1930s helped make Nashville the center of the country music recording industry.
Tennessee's major businesses comprise agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. Poultry, soybeans, and cattle are the state's primary agricultural products, and major manufacturing exports comprise chemicals, electrical equipment and transportation equipment. The country's most visited national park, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is headquartered within the eastern part of Tennessee, and a section of the Appalachian Trail roughly follows the Tennessee-North Carolina border. Several major tourist attractions comprise the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga and Elvis Presley's Graceland within Memphis.
Key outputs for Tennessee include cotton, textiles, electrical power and cattle. The state of Tennessee has over 82,000 farms, approximately 59 percent of which accommodate beef cattle. Even if cotton was an early crop in the state of Tennessee, large-scale cultivation of the fiber did not start until the 1820s with the opening of the land between the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers. The upper wedge of the Mississippi Delta extends into southwestern Tennessee, and it was in this fertile portion that cotton took hold. At present West Tennessee is also heavily planted in soybeans, focusing on the northwest corner of Tennessee.
Tennessee is home to lots of major corporate headquarters, including FedEx Corporation, AutoZone Incorporated and International Paper, that are all based within Memphis; regal Entertainment Group and Pilot Corporation, based within Knoxville; the North American headquarters of Nissan, based in franklin and Eastman Chemical Company, based in Kingsport.
