Referred to as "Surf City", it is an ideal place for people longing relaxation with its 8.5 miles of beautiful climate and stunning beach. The city is situated in Southern California in Orange County, with San Diego 90 miles south and Los Angeles 35 miles north. It was named after Henry Huntington, a railroad entrepreneur, who started the development of the city.
The city is so stunning that numerous popular singers and songwriters have referenced it in their songs. A couple of popular songs that pull their inspiration from Huntington beach are "Surfin' Safari" by the Beach Boys and "Surfer Joe" by the Surfaris. Dean Torrench, from the 1960's band Jan and Dean, said that their song "Surf City" was represented by Huntington Beach as it "embodies the song's spirit of freedom and California fun."
Huntington Beach boasts some of the safest and cleanest beaches in California. The endless sunshine mixed with the cool Pacific waters make it ideal for beachgoers and surfers. The dress code around town is very informal, with sandals, wetsuits and bikinis being the norm.
Huntington Beach was voted the best place to live within Orange County, by the Orange County Register readers. The city provides several kinds of homes to suit whatever income type and has a marvelous education system. The city ensures that all of its amenities, like several parks and boat marinas, are well-kept and kept clean.
The two main industries in Huntington Beach are Technology and Tourism. Presently, there are more than 650 industrial businesses located within the city. Amongst the bigger names that have opted Huntington Beach as home are Boeing, C & D Aerospace, Quicksilver and Cambro manufacturing. There is an assortment of work available in the city.
Within the city, Boeing is amongst the largest businesses. The facilities sit on the former site which was used to serve the Appollo program. From that time, there are still some interesting building still being utilized comprising the S-IVB upper stage for the Saturn IB and Saturn V rockets. As well, a couple of telephone polls still have the "Apollo Dedicated Mission Control Line" written on them.
Quicksilver has also chosen to make its international corporate headquarters within Huntington Beach.
The most abundant natural resource of the city is its beaches. Thusly, tourism accounts for the majority of income of the city. Without a public vote, construction on whichever part of the beach is not allowed so as to enable the city to preserve its natural beauty.
The city itself is located above a natural salt dome. In this salt dome was a reservoir of oil, but through the years it has depleted significantly. At the moment, oil production counts for a significant portion of the local income. There are a total of two offshore extraction facilities left, but it will not be long before tourism has to become the primary income source for the city.
