A small section of the city sits on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation within the southeastern portion of Idaho State. Within the Pocatello metropolitan area it is the principal city and this area consists of all of Power and Bannock counties. The population of Pocatello was around 54,255 according to the Census of 2010.

Pocatello is Idaho State's 5th largest city coming just behind Idaho Falls. Pocatello was placed on the Forbes list of Best Small Places for Careers and Business. The city has an elevation of 1360 meters or 4462 above sea level and is served by the Pocatello Regional Airport. It is home to the manufacturing facility of ON Semiconductor and the Idaho State University.

During the gold rush, Pocatello was established as a vital stop on the first railroad within the state. Later on, the city grew to become an important center for agriculture as it is situated along the Portneuf River. The city of Pocatello emerges from the mountains on the Snake River Plain and travels along the route of the Oregon Trail. Pocatello is named in honor of Chief Pocatello from the Shoshoni Tribe. Chief Pocatello allowed the railroad to travel across the Fort Hall Indian Reservation.

Gold was discovered in Idaho State during the 1860s, causing the first flood of settlers into the Portneuf Valley. The region quickly became a main conduit for the transportation of freight and goods. Jay Gould of the Union Pacific Railroad acquired and extended the Northern and Utah Railway during 1877. This had previously stopped at the Utah border and entered into the state of Idaho via the Portneuf Canyon. The region was first known as "Pocatello Junction," and was established as an important stop along this route during the gold rush. The region began to attract ranchers and farmers after the gold rush. The very first residences and first commercial development appeared in the city of Pocatello by 1882.

The city of Pocatello during 1962, absorbed the neighboring community of Alameda to become for a short time the largest city in the state. Until the late 1990s, Pocatello was the second largest city within the state after Boise. The Treasure Valley then went through rapid growth of southwestern Idaho placed Nampa and Meridian ahead of Idaho Falls and Pocatello. These are now respectively the 4th and 5th biggest cities in the state of Idaho.
