Worcester's centralized location within the state of Massachusetts has led to it being referred to as the "Heart of the Commonwealth." The official symbol of Worcester City is a heart.

This group also supports Bloomsday, lots of national and local poets, conferences and literary tours of Worcester. There are numerous local poets who have competed within the National Poetry Slam and have become really successful.
In the year 1865, the Worcester Employment Society was founded. Now, the location has been transformed into the Worcester Center for Crafts, which offers professional level instruction to the Worcester community. The original purpose of the institution was to teach immigrants the skills and abilities they needed to create and sell crafts. Nowadays, they seek to promote an appreciation for the fine arts by offering education in metalwork, weaving, woodwork, enameling, jewelry-making and an assortment of other crafts.
