 Forklift Attachments Bixby - Bixby (population 20,884) is a city in the U.S. state of Oklahoma. It is a suburb of Tulsa and is situated in both Tulsa and Wagoner counties. The population has increased by 7,500 residents in the past decade and is amongst the fastest growing communities within Oklahoma. Despite its growth Bixby is still referred to as "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma", the location to come for purchasing fresh produce.
The region was initially settled during the late 1800s by the son of Muscogee (Creek) and Scottish parents, Alexander Posey. Posey, who became a nationally known political satirist, established a community referred to as "Posey on Posey Creek." The community had a general store, two saloons and a blacksmith, and by the year 1895 it had a post office. The city was named after a chairman of the Dawes Commission, Tams Bixby.
During the year 1913 the discovery of oil fields nearby caused growth within Bixby, although the township remained a farming community well into the 20th Century. Wheat, Alfalfa and cotton were the main agricultural products until the 1930s, when production of vegetables became more vital. Recognized as a regional shipping hub for agricultural produce by railroad, Bixby was called "The Garden Spot of Oklahoma." The railroad shipped cantaloupes, potatoes, squash, turnips, spinach, sweet corn and radishes from Bixby all around the country. Just recently, these farms have been transformed to the production of sod, primarily Bermuda grass. Even though just a fraction of inhabitants are still working within agriculture, the township still carries on its traditions with the annual "Green Corn Festival" held each and every summer.
Bixby plays host to numerous public events at the Washington Irving Park and Arboretum. The park is named for a well-known American author who visited the town during the year 1832. The Washington Irving Park contains a bronze statue of Irving, and the stage of the amphitheatre has been made to resemble the front of Irving's home within Tarrytown, New York. The park entrance gates are replicas of the gates at Irving's estate. Drama students of Bixby present a dramatization of Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow within the park each and every fall. The park also hosts the famous "Bixby BBQ & Music Festival" and the "Deutschesfest".
