 Forklift Attachments Abilene - Abilene, a city situated next to the geographic center of the state of Texas, is considered to be "the Future Great City of West Texas" and serves as the county seat for Taylor County. The county presently hosts a population of approximately 120,000 with 115,930 of them residing in the city limits of Abilene. It is conveniently situated adjacent to Interstate 20. Abilene was established in March, 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railroad was finally finished.
Though Abilene is not fairly as large as several other cities situated within the state of Texas, it still provides an ample amount of dining, lodging, shopping and cultural opportunities. Abilene is fast becoming recognized as a regional center for distribution, commerce, education, industry, and transportation.
Through the years, Abilene has transformed from being a cattle-shipping prairie town to a busy city with a booming economy based on agriculture, military and oil. The extent of economic diversity that the city offers attracts many determined citizens. Abilene solicits new industries by providing tax incentives and many opportunities.
Abilene was the very first city within the state of Texas to fight the 1980s oil bust by creating a half-cent sales tax to help finance economic development during 1986.
There are some attractions to be found within the city of Abilene. For those who are athletically inclined, there is the Abilene Skate Park, Abilene Speedway, the Ball Ranch, Mesquite Hill Motocross and the Abilene Dragstrip. The city of Abilene also offers some unique attractions, such as The Grace Museum, the National Center for Children's Illustrated Literature, 12 Armored Division Memorial Museum, the Center for Contemporary Arts, Paramount Theatre, Prime Time Family Entertainment center, Cockerell Galleries and Studios, Abilene Ballet Theatre, Abilene Community Bank, Abilene Community Theatre, Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra, Abilene Opera Association, the Amy Graves Ryan Little Theatre and the Chorus Abilene.
Other attractions within the city limits, consist of the Abilene Zoo, the Dyess Visitor Center Memorial Park, the Abilene State Park and the Buffalo Gap Historic Village. Within the city of Abilene there are over 25 parks that take up a total of around 1,246 acres.
The is a vast variety of animals housed at the Abilene Zoo, somewhere in the vicinity of several hundred animals. During the year, the Zoo offers several educational courses and summer programs. They even have some special events that take place every so often. Some of the newer attractions include a Southern American Maned Wolf Exhibit, a cougar exhibit and a Black Rhino Exhibit. The Elm Creek backyard area would house several animals such as skunks, otters and armadillos that have been found locally.
