Located in the County of Washington and part of the Portland metropolitan area, The city of Hillsboro has a population of around 91,600. Many high-technology corporations make up what is referred to in the region as the Silicon Forest.
This area of the Tualatin Valley was inhabited for thousands of years by the Kalapuya's Atfalati tribe. The moderate weather condition and plentiful agricultural, fishing and hunting opportunities made the area ideal for European-American settlement. A village was established by 1842. It was named to honor an Oregon politician, David Hill.
During the early part of the 1870s, the settler economy thrived due to the railroad and to riverboat transportation along the Tualatin River. These did not arrive until the early part of the 1870s. An interurban electric railway was constructed during the early part of the 1900s. These kinds of transportation, comprising highways, pushed the local population to approximately 2,000 by 1910 and roughly 5,000 by 1950.
The city of Hillsboro has developed a strong high-tech industry, beginning in the 1980s. Other important economic sectors comprise retail sales, agriculture and health care. The area has grape production and many wineries. Manufacturing is the top employment sector with practically a quarter of the workforce employed in various manufacturing operations. 68 percent of employees commute to work, with an average commute time of 24 minutes (one way).
As the center of Oregon's Silicon Forest, the city of Hillsboro is home to companies like for instance Intel, that has a number of campuses, the biggest of which are Ronler Acres, hawthorn Farm and Jones farm. The company employs roughly 16,000 local individuals. Other businesses operating in Hillsboro consist of Yahoo!, Credence Systems, Epson, Sun Microsystems High-End Operations and Synopsys. Corporate head office for FEI Company, TriQuint Semiconductor, Lattice Semiconductor, RadiSys and Planar Systems are located here. Hillsboro is home is home to the health Profession Campus of the Pacific University.
Hillsboro's recreational facilities include the Hillsboro Stadium and various parks. The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) lists nine sites in Hillsboro. The city of Hillsboro is served by light rail transit, the Hillsboro Airport and public buses.
