The city of Jackson was named to honor Andrew Jackson. He was a general at the time of the naming and afterward went on to become President. "City with Soul" is the slogan for Jackson, Mississippi. According to Forbes Magazine, out of the 100 largest metro areas in the United States, it was placed 3rd for the best "Bang for Your Buck City." This study measured many aspects including overall affordability and housing, together with different other things. Moreover, Jackson is ranked as the country's 23rd most unsafe city according to the 14th annual "City Crime Rankings: Crime in Metropolitan America."
The community was originally established in 1821 and known as "LeFleur's Bluff. The site was chosen as the ideal location for a town which could become the Mississippi state capital. During 1821, a legislative act approved the site to become the permanent seat of government for Mississippi State. That very same year it was decided to name Jackson, in honor of Major General Andrew Jackson. Afterward, this gentleman will become the 7th President of the nation.
After one year, the area became incorporated as a city. Jackson became a target of Union troops in the Civil War. The city of Jackson was ravaged and burned lots of times under General William T. Sherman's command. The post war recovery of the area was slow. The city of Jackson started to experience a sharp population increase during the turn of the 20th century. It eventually became amongst the most dynamic growth areas in the Sunbelt.
During the 1930s industrial development was spurred by the discovery of natural gas close by. Jackson became a scene of racial unrest in the 1960's and the 1970's. This destructive behavior was epitomized by the slaying of Medgar Evers, civil rights activist and NAACP leader in 1963, by a white supremacist. There have been lots of improvements during the following decades within the area of race relations. The Jackson City Council members voted unanimously in 2004 in honor of Medgar Evers by renaming the Jackson International Airport.
Jackson is a center in Mississippi State for such recreational activities as fine cuisine, cultural attractions and music. The Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center is one of the best sites to visit. This particular building is situated really near the State Capitol building. It features artifacts, pictures and art, celebrating the rich African American experience within the Deep South. The Museum is located within the former Smith Robertson School, that originally opened in the year 1894. It was the very first public school to be built within the city of Jackson intended for African American student.
The Jackson Zoo is amongst the great landmarks in Jackson. It has operating ever since the year 1919 and proudly services hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. There are over 100 different kinds of animals on display and many of them are considered to be endangered. The Russell C. Davis Planetarium is one more highlight within downtown Jackson. It provides the people a chance to experience gorgeous space scenes with incredible large scale film action and colorful laser image projection.
