During 1636, the town was incorporated and in 1846 it became a city when the first township of Old Cambridge amalgamated together with two villages Cambridge Port and East Cambridge.

The city had a major industrial focus in the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries, on industries such as glass and furniture businesses. At present, the emphasis of the economy has shifted to a technology-based economy which includes economies in electronics, software and biotechnology research.
