The name of the city came from a small town within Santander, situated on the north shore of Spain. Spaniard Jose de Escandon established one of the last northern provinces of New Spain, Nuevo Santander. The objective was to colonize the country Mexico. The city was colonized during the year 1755 and was originally called San Agustin de Laredo. Along with Laredo, six other settlements were founded along the Rio Grande by Escandon, including Reynosa and Carmargo in the year 1749, Dolores and Revilla in 1750, and Mier during the year 1752. Laredo is thought to be the oldest independent settlement in Texas State because there were no missions associated with its founding. It is presently the only remaining Spanish colonial settlement on the north bank of the lower Rio Grande.

On May 15, the year 1755, Captain Tomas Sanchez, together with three families, settled 15 leagues of land on the Rio Grande. The family raised cattle, sheep, goats, horses, oxen and mules. The city of Laredo was laid out by 1767 with the economy mostly focused on ranching.

Within the city of Laredo, there are four South Texas banking institutions: the Falcon International Bank, International Bank of Commerce, BBVA Compass, and Texas Community Bank. The city of Laredo has the largest inland port within the US. Because of the North American Free Trade Agreement, its strategic location, several twin assembly plants, and dozens of import export agencies.
