The city of Little Rock got its name from the small rock formation and stone outcropping situated on Arkansas River's south bank. This formation is called la Petite Roche and means "little rock" in the French language. The city itself is located close to the geographic center of the state of Arkansas. Early river traffic and travelers utilized the "little rock" as a landmark and this eventually turned into a well recognized river crossing. La Petit Roche was named by Jean-Baptiste Bernard de la Harpe, a French trader and explorer. This area marked the transition to the flat Mississippi Delta region from the Quachita Mountain foothills.
Prior to the European arrival, Native American tribes have inhabited the region for thousands years around Central Arkansas. There are many archaeological artifacts found in the area which supports these findings. Among the early settlers in the area included Bluff Dwellers, the different Mississippian culture civilizations who built numerous earthwork mounds that were recorded by the expedition of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto during the year 1541. In addition, the Folsom people likewise have evidence of settling the region. Various historical tribes from the area comprise the Caddo, Cherokee, Osage, Quapaw and the Choctaw.
