Denton County was originally formed from a Texas land grant in the year 1846. The city was founded shortly after during 1857. The city was named after a pioneer and Texas militia captain, John B. Denton. The city of Denton can distinguish itself from the surrounding regions by establishing the two state universities.
Denton has an economy that is mainly based on educational services, retail trade, health and social, and manufacturing services. The businesses within these sectors hire around 20,000 people. Over 12,000 jobs are given due to the three educational institutes and the city hires around 1,300, of which three hundred are public safety personnel. The Golden Triangle Mall is amongst the main sources of retail trade, that hosts over ninety specialty shops. The more outstanding companies that have their head offices within Denton include Sally Beauty Company, Jostens and Peterbilt.
The city of Denton hosts numerous events and festivals all through the year. During Springtime, there is a Jazz and Arts festival within the city which draws many visitors to the area. More than 300,000 individuals come to the annual North Texas State Fair and Rodeo and the Jazz and Arts festival. The city of Denton was named as the "Best Music Scene" by Scene magazine in 2008. The Cinco de Mayo, Dog Days of Summer, Twilight Tunes, and the Fry Street Fair are amongst the other popular yearly events. Racing fans are pleased to find that the Texas Motor Speedway is located around fourteen miles south and Denton Dragway is located about five miles north of the city of Denton.
Denton City has a lot of cultural places, including Denton County,the Bayless-Selby House, Denton County Historical Museum and Texas Heritage Centre, Courthouse-on-the-Square Museum, Gowns of the First Ladies of Texas, Hangar 10 Flying Museum, UNT Sky Theater Planetarium, Historic Downtown Denton, and Little Chapel-in-the-Woods.
