As of the year 2010, it is the 4th largest city in Connecticut and the 8th largest city within New England. Stamford is a part of the Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk Metro area.
The commuter rail system for metropolitan NYC, called the Metro-North Railroad, travels through Stamford as part of the New Haven Line. It provides faster trains which travel into Stamford. In one hour drive of Stamford are a total of six major airports such as the Newark Liberty International Airport, that is located in the state of New Jersey and the John F. Kennedy International Airport, that is located inside New York.
The region around the existing Stamford was once called Rippowam by the native area inhabitants. The first European settlers likewise utilized this name until it was later switched to Stamford, a name which is derived from a town within Lincolnshire, England. On the 1st of July, the year 1640, Captain Turner of the New Haven Colony and Chief Ponus signed the deed to the city of Stamford. New York residents began to build summer homes on the seashore in the late 19th century. Some even moved there permanently and commuted to the city of Manhattan by train, though this practice did not become commonplace until much later. In 1893 Stamford was incorporated.
There are several company head office located within Stamford, such as many Courant 100, Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies. Amongst the largest head office which are located in Stamford are Tasty Bite, World Wrestling Entertainment, and Pitney Bowes. As well, Stamford is home to the Norther American Headquarters of UBS. The Royal Bank of Scotland runs its North American operations from the city, like for instance its RBS Greenwich Capital subsidiary.
There is high rental costs in the city, that forced a lot of huge businesses outside the city, like MeadWestvaco, Xerox, GE Capital, International Paper, Clairol and NBC have moved their offices outside of the Stamford.
There are several university campuses situated within the city of Stamford, such as the University of Connecticut, the University of Bridgeport, and Sacred Heart University. The campus of the University of Connecticut was opened during the year 1998 within a huge, recently renovated building downtown, that was the big Bloomingdales store former home. The two other university campuses are situated in the River Bend Executive Center, which is the leading information and communication center of Fairfield County. All of these are commuter campuses.
