 Forklift Attachments Yonkers - The city of Yonkers is located just outside of New York City, around 2 miles north of Manhattan. It is considered to be the most inhabited city in the county of Westchester and the 4th most inhabited city in the state of New York with a population of roughly 195,976. The most inhabited cities within the state of New York are Rochester, New York and Buffalo.
Located within the city of Yonkers are some attractions, such as the Sherwood House, the Hudson River Museum, the Science Barge, Cross County Shopping Center, Yonkers raceway and Ridge Hill Shopping Center. The raceway just renovated during the year 2006, adding legalized video slot machine gambling and revitalizing its' grounds and clubhouse. There are some shopping areas located all around Central Park Avenue, which is usually called "Central Ave" by the people who reside there.
The city's history begins when Adriaen Van der Donck got a land grant form the Dutch East India Company in the latter part of the 1640's. He built one of the very first saw mills within the region at the location where the Nepperhan Creek intersects the Hudson River. Van der Donck was lovingly known as Jonk Herr, that means young nobleman. Eventually, his land became called "Jonk Heer's land." The phrase developed into "the Younckers" and then finally into Yonkers. Due to it's centralized location, Yonkers City quickly established itself as a main trading center. During the early history of Yonkers it was mainly an agricultural community, but it's waterfront location soon led to innovations in travel, that in turn accelerated the establishment of various businesses all around the city of Yonkers. There are quite a few times throughout history where the city of Yonkers played a key role in making carpets and hats. As well, it was the location of the globe's first elevated mass transit system. Yonkers was first incorporated in 1872 with a population of around 20,000.
The city has recently put forth a proposal to revitalize the locality, with more than $3 billion dollars worth of changes. The proposal promises to add luxury housing, waterfront development, and lots of commercial and retail space. The objective is to increase tourism and the economic significance of the city to the county and New York State.
There are quite a few annual events which attract thousands of individuals to the city each year. The Yonkers Hudson Riverfest, that provides a diverse selection of entertainment, ethnic foods and crafts, draws a crowd of more than 15,000 individuals. The Untermyer Performing Arts Festival holds performances each Saturday evening throughout the summer. The events, that comprise opera, dance, music and street theatre, are held on the Hudson River and are free of charge. What's more, the Yonkers Philharmonic Orchestra plays five times each and every year.
