 Forklift Attachments Rochester - Rochester (population 210,565) is a city within the state of New York. It serves as the county seat for the County of Monroe. It is the 3rd most densely inhabited city in the state after the city of New York and the city of Buffalo. Rochester is situated just south of Lake Ontario.
Rochester's Bigger Metropolitan Area covers all of Monroe County and parts of Genesee County, Livingston County, Orleans County, Wayne County and Ontario County. Based on the 2010 Census, the metro area has a population of around 1,054,300 residents.
The city of Rochester has a rich and vibrant arts and culture sector as Rochester places a priority on the arts. Offering lots of opportunities for Greater Rochester inhabitants in the city's Arts & Cultural Council. Cultural institutions comprise the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Strong Museum, the Rochester Museum & Science Center, the AV Room, the Strasenburg Planetarium and the Geva Theatre Center. Once recognized as The World's Image Centre, because of its role in the history of photography, the city is home to the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film. The city's yearly calendar consists of the Park Avenue Merchants Festival, the Rochester Jazz Festival and the Corn Hill Festival. Film festivals are held each year, most particularly the High Falls Film Festival.
Rochester's colourful vernacular has extended beyond the city's border. The city locals popularized the term "pop" which means soda drinks. Hot dogs are called "red hots".
Known as the Flour City, the city of Rochester has been more recently dubbed "the Flower City". The city attracts more than 100,000 tourists from all around the globe who come to the annual Lilac Festival. Individuals who love outdoor activities can hike around spectacular waterfalls and canyons at Letchworth State Park, south of the city. A lot of people have cottages in the nearby Finger Lakes Region.
Eastman Kodak is among a few Fortune 1000 companies located within Rochester. Kodak was at one time the areas biggest employer. Bausch and Lomb is another one of the numerous regional and national businesses situated within the city. Rochester was the birthplace of Xerox in the year 1906, then called The Haloid Company. Xerox still has a presence in Rochester. Western Union was established within the Rochester region, but has since moved.
Because of the city's large concentration of optical science research and businesses, Rochester is recognized as the imaging capital of the globe. The Institute of Optics is located on the campus of the University of Rochester. Rochester Institute of Technology in nearby Henrietta also has an imaging program. The University of Rochester is currently the largest employer in the Rochester region.
