He noticed a reddish colored cypress pole that was covered with bloody animals, serving to mark the boundary between the Houma and Bayou Goula hunting grounds. They referred to location and the pole "le bāton rouge," which translates to "the red stick."

First, the local Native Americans had named the region "Istrouma." Proof has been found within 3 Native American mounds situated within city limits and along the Comite, Mississippi and Amite Rivers. Archaeologists have been able to determine indigenous habitation of the area to 8000 BC. These mounds were constructed in the Middle Archaic period by gatherer-hunter societies maybe as early as 4500 BC which is long before the Egyptian pyramids were built.
